This holiday season is bound to be a little strange between Zoom office Christmas parties and smaller holiday gatherings. While there’s always stress around the holidays, this year it’s definitely not worth stressing over what to wear.
Looking back at my holiday outfits over the years, I noticed a sort of pattern. I had unintentionally developed an easy holiday outfit formula without even noticing. And the best part about this outfit formula? It’s one you can probably already piece together with what’s in your closet.

Easy Holiday Outfit Formula
Fitted Black Sweater
The base of this holiday outfit is a fitted black sweater. It can be a turtleneck like I’m wearing, a crew neck, or an off-the-shoulder style (EU) – whatever floats your boat. The most important thing is that it’s fitted. While I love a chunky knit, they can tend to make your look appear frumpy. Plus you don’t want to be sweating all night long.
Dressy Midi Skirt
This is where the easy holiday outfit formula gets fun. For this post, I added a gold slip skirt (EU). But you can also try something sparkly like I did in this post or have fun with plaid like I did in this Instagram post. Honestly, the sky is the limit. Just make sure you pick something fun and festive, as it’s the star of your look.
Tights and Boots
Tights are the best way to stay warm during the holiday season. Even if no one will see them, I often have this pair under any dresses or skirts purely for warmth.
A pair of boots helps to keep this look grounded. I wear this pair with pretty much every outfit during the holiday season. But, you can also try a knee-high pair (EU) or a pair of strappy sandals (EU) if you live somewhere warm.
Accessories
This is the second area where you can have some fun with your holiday outfit formula. Throw on a padded headband (EU) or grab your nicest handbag. Or if your skirt is loud, let it do the talking by adding a dainty necklace.
